Water and Dreams

Rare Blood From the opening of Century Caves you can tell you are in the presence of a special artist. Her talent is off the scale. I love everything about this album. The concepts, the creativity, the execution, the layering. Some real contrasts in here also, for example between the soaring voice and the rumbling, distored synths. Her Instagram has some live performances where her voice appears to be just as good. Easily my favourite album of the year so far.

about

Thea Grant's "Water and Dreams" masterfully intertwines rhythmic dance influences and emotive performance art, crafting a profound sonic narrative.

Each track unfolds like a chapter in an intricate tale, merging music and movement seamlessly. "Century Caves" and the ahunted waltz of "Far From Face" echo the enigmatic depth inherent in performance art, inviting contemplation and reflection through Grant's evocative lyrics and melodies.

"I decided early on to start composing with no boundaries, improvising freely with my effects on a set of themes related to my experiences during a ten day stay on an island off the coast of North Norway. I gradually started layering vocals and elaborating on parts that felt particularly fundamental - moving away from H2O and slipping into the world of dreams. "

This album transcends mere sound, offering an immersive experience akin to witnessing a choreographed performance. The ebb and flow of rhythms mimic dance's grace, while Grant's vocals act as expressive channels, employing creative vocal manipulation to enhance emotive depth.

"Water and Dreams" showcases varied emotional landscapes, from the contrasts of "Obsidian Light" to the diverse sonic palette reflecting the range of feelings found in dance.

"I work from an intuitive reaction to my surroundings - usually an image or a shape appears in my inner mind which I then try to reproduce vocally. On working with “Water and Dreams” I was especially drawn to the fracturing and ever-morphing patterns of the ocean and its display of contrasting characters - graceful and clumsy, non-repetitive and constant, romantic and terrifying. "

Grant's artistry invites listeners into a journey beyond music, urging introspection through a captivating, evocative soundscape. It's more than an album; it's an emotive exploration, a fusion of music and performance art that invites engagement with the complexities of human experience.

"Symbolism, surrealism and inner landscapes play an important role in my work across projects - I guess I've always been drawn to things that twist and turn our perception of reality, images that stir our subconscious without explanation.

My desire to come close to a kind of truth and at the same time move away from that truth every time I get close is a core part of what feeds my creative intention and drive - hovering somewhere between reality and imagination."
